Let the people decide how to spend their taxes

As most of you probably know, the Unites States government is having financial problems right now. And to compound the problem, the politicians can’t agree on anything to solve these problems. It all comes down to spending and income. No two politicians will agree on how much we should tax the populace, and how we should spend tax revenue. I may have a solution for this.So I had a crazy idea today…why not let the people decide how to spend their tax money? Congress could pass a new law that sets up a Tax framework. For starters, each person would pay the exact percentage they are supposed to pay now, based on their tax bracket. But where each citizen’s tax money goes could be their own decision. The government could setup a website where you could divide up your tax money. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time with it, you could pick general categories like health care, military, transportation, etc. After that, the government would decide how to further divide up your money (based on predefined rules.) If you want to take the time, you could divide up your money down to specific gov’t organizations and causes. If you don’t want to bother at all, the gov’t would use a default formula (again, pre-defined) to divide up your tax money. So at the end of every April, the government’s budget for the next 12 months would be set…by the people. No more budget fights that last 8 months into the budget year. And no more angry citizens that don’t like how the politicians are spending their money. What do you think? I think it’s so crazy, it just might work. 🙂
