The book of scriptures known as the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. Mormons do believe that it does not replace the Bible; it is another witness for the truths that are taught in the Bible. It contains the complete account of the everlasting gospel and is an account of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the American continents from about 2247 B.C. to 421 A.D.1 The original records were compiled and abridged to form the Book of Mormon, and which were written on gold plates by prophets who were commanded to keep records of God’s dealings with them and their people. There are several accounts in the Bible that prophesy of the coming forth and things that are relevant to the Book of Mormon.1 In 1827, the angel Moroni, the last Book of Mormon prophet, delivered these records to the Prophet Joseph Smith. This was in fulfillment of John’s prophecy found in Revelations 14:6-7. By the power of God, the Prophet Joseph Smith translated these records into English.Mormons believe that there are three main purposes of the Book of Mormon; that being, to bear record of Christ, to clarify what His mission is and that he is the Redeemer and Savior of the world; to teach the doctrines of the gospel in such a way that the plan of salvation will be understood with clarity; and to stand as a witness to the world that Joseph Smith was chosen by God to lay the foundation and restore Christ’s Church in the latter days. If one were to compare such topics as: the atonement, baptism, miracles, revelation, faith, etc. with the Bible and the Book of Mormon, they would find that the Book of Mormon clarifies the teachings taught by Christ. One seeking to know if the Book of Mormon is true, need only do as Moroni taught, "When ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost."2 The duty of the ‘seeker’ is to read, then ask God with a sincere heart, having a great desire to know if the Book of Mormon is true; if this is done, than God is bound and He will keep his promise of manifesting the truth to the ‘seeker’.
